Multiple inheritance

Context

A term in ontology.

Definition

When a type inherits from more than one supertype, we say that the type has multiple inheritance. Type-hierarchies must support multiple inheritance.

Example

For example, if we have the following top-level categories:

  • Man
  • Woman
  • Single
  • Married

we can define the following four bottom-level categories:

  • A Husband is a Married Man
  • A Wife is a Married Woman
  • A Bachelor is a Single Man
  • A Bachelorette is a Single Woman

This can be drawn as in the following lattice:
